DESCRIPTION:Downstairs Gallery\n“Limited Editions” Woodcuts & Monoprints by Laurie Leavitt\nSeptember 1-30\, 2017\n\nHolliston artist Laurie Leavitt has exhibited her paintings at the library several times in past years. Her current exhibit showcases Laurie’s most recent work: woodcuts and monotypes. They are works on paper that explore her ongoing fascination with the beauty in the patterns in nature. More info at: www.LaurieLeavitt.com\n\nIn Laurie’s words:\n“Beauty in the patterns of nature provide endless subject matter\, as they change by the hour and the time of year. Whether it is a stark winter scene warmed by the glowing red light of dusk or looking up at birches converging in the sky\, I love to interpret nature in my work. \nI capture images on film that catch my eye and transform them through woodcuts. This medium helps me to interpret the scene and requires a simplification of the shapes\, forms and color. Woodcuts are imperfect and can vary when they are printed and the wood grain and carving marks pick up ink and show themselves on my print\, creating depth and texture. Sometimes\, I unintentionally chip them and the carving tool is guided off its intended path by the strength of the wood grain. The organic character of the wood becomes part of the image and still\, somehow\, the simple shapes convey a recognizable image. \nOnce the print is complete and the woodblock is carved away to its last color\, I am left with an image that I can play with\, by combining it with other woodblocks\, repeating\, reversing and layering. The resulting second set of one of a kind prints\, reflect this process of play and experimentation\, when plans are made but room is left for unexpected things to happen.” \n\n\nUpstairs Display Case\n“Nantucket Lightship Baskets” by Lisa DiMarino\nSeptember 1 – December 2\, 2017\n\nLisa DiMarino is one of Boston’s rising Nantucket Lightship Basket artists. Her day job as a healthcare administrator can be challenging\, so Lisa began looking for a new craft as a therapeutic outlet. Not only has Lisa found her passion\, she has met many artists and new friends along the way. Her teacher\, Brenda Burton of Pelham\, NH\, has been an invaluable genius in the art of Nantucket Lightship Baskets. \n“I have a vision before I begin each project. I am very selective of my parts that I include throughout the process. I love working in the details & seeing each piece develop and brought full circle. It allows me to bring out my creativity.” \nMore information can be found at www.saxonvillebaskets.com. \nLower Level: Community Room and Conference Room\nPhotographs by Lynne Damianos\n\nProfessional and Fine Art Photographer Lynne Damianos is currently exhibiting photographic work from her NatureScape series that are on an extended loan to the Ashland Library.  All of the images are part of Lynne’s personal exploration of the natural environment. \nIn the large community room downstairs are 6 black & white images created over a two-week period amid breathtaking vistas on Maui\, Hawaii. By eliminating color and concentrating on shape\, light and texture\, she brings out the exquisite forms of these striking trees. In the downstairs conference room is another group of images\, some in black & white\, and some in color\, that are a bit more abstract. They are photographs of details\, little things from the world around us that we don’t readily notice that focus in on patterns\, shapes and light. \n\n \nIf you are a collector and would like to share your collection with the Library community by exhibiting all or part of it in the locked display case near the main circulation desk\, please contact Larry DeJong at leftaris@gmail.com.
